Q. What causes abnormal muscle function?

A. Injury, nerve interference, or disease may cause abnormal muscle function. In most cases, your doctor is concerned with abnormal muscle function associated with the vertebral subluxation complex.

Q. What is the vertebral subluxation complex?

A. The vertebral subluxation complex occurs when abnormal spinal mechanics results in interference with normal nerve function. When nerve function is interfered with, muscles, blood vessels, and organs may malfunction. Left uncorrected, this can result in pain, sickness, or disability and inhibit your body's ability to express its full health potential.

Q. What does EMG Stand for?

A. The initials are an abbreviation for electromyography. "Electro" means electric, "myo" means muscle, and "graphy" means to draw. An EMG produces a graph of the electrical activity of your muscles.

Q. What does the Insight EMG measure?

A. When a muscle contracts, it produces a small electrical signal. The harder the muscle pulls, the more electricity it gives off. The Insight EMG accurately measures the electrical signals produced by muscles.

Q. Does the Insight EMG test hurt?

A. No. The Insight surface EMG does not use any needles or electric shocks. An Insight surface EMG is a pleasant experience. After cleaning the skin of your back and neck with alcohol, the doctor or technician will gently place probes on certain spots along your spine. The test usually takes less than ten minutes.

Q. Why has my doctor ordered this test?

A. Abnormal muscle function frequently accompanies spinal problems. The information from the EMG will help your doctor determine the type of care that is best for your case. In addition, follow up tests may be performed to determine how well you are responding to the chiropractic care.

Q. Can't the same information be obtained from an x-ray as an EMG?

A. No. X-rays are a valuable part of your chiropractic analysis. They help your doctor to determine if there are mechanical problems in your spine. X-rays may also reveal fractures and disease processes. However, x-rays do not provide any information about the function of the muscles around the spine. That is why EMG is necessary.

Q. Will I need more than one surface EMG exam?

A. If the first EMG is abnormal, your doctor will want follow up exams periodically to evaluate how you are responding to care.
